U/12

Hi this weeks update.

1.      Grand Final Match Report

Glen Iris 9/124 (Y Billias 30, A Mather 21 ret, J Ward 11 ret, L Meddings 11, J Mylius 10) lost to North Balwyn 2/129 (M Tyquin 2/23) Man of the Match: Yanni Billias with special mention to Jackson Ward

Summary: We Lost! Sunday was one of those days where things don’t quite work out as you had planned (or hoped). North Balwyn bowled, fielded and batted better than us and reversed the result from just two weeks ago. We tried everything but not much worked and they were too good on the day.

There were a lot of emotions during and after today’s game and at times this spilled over, which is understandable considering the time and effort invested by everyone. During the season I have asked a lot of you at training and at matches, because I know what you are capable of. I have one more request for 2009/10 and that is to be proud of what you have achieved as individuals but more importantly what we achieved as a team.

A slightly different format of match report focusing on positives from Sunday.

Steve Everett: Opened the innings and although scoring was difficult survived the first 12 overs. Looking back if we had lost early wickets I doubt we would have batted out our 45 overs.

Alex Mather: In the past 12 months Alex has played five semi/grand finals. Opening the innings against the new ball in all these matches his scores are 24, 37, 36, 42, 21ret. Don’t really need to say much more...

Tommy Stevens: Probably has a nice bruise on his inside thigh after getting hit. This seemed to unsettle Tommy. Worked hard all day on the boundary and saved a number of boundaries.

Xavier Jordan: The X Man missed out with the bat today but bowled pretty well. Stoped the flow of boundaries and lots of dot balls but the batters weren’t prepared to take any risks. Kept the talk going all day in the field.

Lucas Meddings: Looked the best of the batters getting to 11 with smart batting. A calling mix up saw Lucas run out. Sometimes things go bad. Behind the stumps took a catch and gave up no byes (first time this year we have let through zero byes).

Jasper Mylius: Another batter to get a start (10) but fell to their spinner. Was the best of our faster bowlers and looked like getting a wicket in his first spell. Kept his head up in the field to the final delivery.

Shaun Morris: Held the first catch in gully to give him five in two games. Unfortunately we couldn’t put the ball in the right sport often enough to create more chances for him.

Yanni Billias: Batted superbly with the lower order to 1. Allow us to bat out our 45 overs and 2. Get the score to 124 which was at least something to bowl at. This was the best performance for us today and took out the Man of the Match Award.

Hamish Heath: Unlucky with the bat today with the ball rolling back onto the stumps. Along with Rat kept the byes to a season low of zero. Has a basketball grand final this week so lets hope for a positive result there.

Matthew Tyquin: Combined with Yanni for a 13 run partnership and hit one of the best shots of the day. Took our only two wickets with the ball and finishes as the leading wicket taker across all GICC Under 12 teams.

Will Keep: Team act of the day goes to Will. When he and Yanni both ended up at the same end it was Will who headed to the non strikers end and the eventual run out. Biggest positive is he got to finish the year playing after being sick before the semi final.

Jackson Ward: Best batting performance of the season with 11 retired. Pick of all the bowlers and could have had figures 2/0 from five overs, had to settle for 0/5. Did well on the boundary where he needed to field plenty of balls.

Tom Maclean: Got the last minute call up for the semi final and did all that was asked of him but with Will back to full fitness was the unlucky player to miss out. Spent the day supporting the team and got some time in the field. Bought me a Slurpee after the game! Thanks Tom.

Thanks to all the parents, grand parents, other Under 12 players and other Glen Iris people who came down and supported us today.

Finally: Well done to the Under 16As who won their Grand Final on Sunday.  A great result for a talented group of players, many of whom started at Glen Iris back in Under 10s.

Cricket is a funny game: After the match the Under 16s and Under 12s got together at Eric Raven Reserve for a pizza night. The cricket bat came out (for about two minutes) but then someone got the footy out and the new season was under way.

2.      Presentation Day / Fund Raiser (see attached for more detail)

A few notes regarding next Sunday's presentation day and spit roast fundraiser. I still need RSVPs. We will also ask for help during the afternoon/evening by age group level. We are also planning some items for auction for footy followers.

Today's Grand Final games gave mixed results. A comfortable win was recorded by the U16As whilst it wasn't to be the day for the U12A's, unfortunately recording their first loss for the year. Well done to these sides.

There will be activities either side of the U12 presentation and I would ask you RSVP to Alan Solomon.

To follow is a note from Sue Oliver regarding help with Salads

This year we have decided to call for volunteers to make salads for the Junior Presentation Day, as noted in previous emails from Alan Solomon.
